Bowl Games

They do bring their excitement, despite their irrelevance.

About to be a good one on right now. La Tech vs. TCU. Go La Tech!

Stay classy, TCU.

Stay classy, TCU.

Did you know?

Kellen Moore has never scored a touchdown against TCU in his two attempts in playing them.

It’s cool to be a Mountain West homer, but to say the Big Est is scorched earth is a bit of an overstatement. ACC hasn’t taken UConn yet and the other programs are solid all-sports teams that will be in a league someplace one way or another.

The football league dissolving and going the way of basketball only is possible. But what’s also apparent right now is that the best basketball conference in the country went from 17 to 14 members with teams on the outside knocking to get in. Army, Navy Air Force and some 4th school won’t be a panacea, but I guess the point is…while I have absolutely no confidence in the current Big East commissioner to figure this out, there are options for the Big East if they want them.

The Big East has plenty of options, but I don’t know if they are going to be able to pull it off and save their AQ. We’ll just have to see, I guess.

What could have been… once again

It appears that the Big East is about crash and that all their current members will go elsewhere. Even if they are to survive, they aren’t keeping their AQ status unless they get at least one quality program somehow. So I must bring out the point of what could have been in the Mountain West. Let me ask a series of questions:

  • Would Utah have a better chance going to a BCS bowl in the Mountain West or the Pac-12?
  • Would TCU have a better chance going to a BCS bowl in the Mountain West or the Big 12?
  • Would BYU have a better chance going to a BCS bowl in the Mountain West or as an independent / Big 12?

The right answer is the Mountain West, for all three of these. I know, I know. Money, money, blah blah blah. Revenue revenue blah blah blah. Recruiting. Tradition. Blah blah blah.

I’m just saying, with the Big East going down, it only would have been a matter of time until the old MWC would have been an AQ conference, but that’s not going to happen anymore I don’t think. Though with Nevada, Hawaii, and Fresno moving in, I guess it’s not out of the realm of possibility. That seems stronger than Uconn and West Virginia.

Big East could lose AQ status

In order to be an AQ conference, one of the requirements is to have AT LEAST 7 schools. Having lost Pitt and Syracuse, this will drop them down to 6 now that TCU isn’t going to join. Looks like they will be adding someone fast, or the conference will collapse. They probably shouldn’t be a AQ team as of now anyways.

For those keeping count

TCU has lost to two different Texas schools this season. So, them accepting to play in a conference with a ton of Texas schools might not have been in their best interest.

What did Boise’s move do to the WAC? That led to Fresno, Nevada and Hawaii going to the MWC also. In a couple years, Utah State and Louisiana Tech will be the top teams… Might as well be dead. It’s also not right for the Big 12 to cater to Texas.

Okay, lets face it. The WAC has always been a conference for smaller schools making their adjustments to the Division 1-A. Throughout history their top programs go elsewhere. You know what the WAC was when it started? Arizona, Arizona State, BYU, Utah, Air Force, TCU, etc.

And you’re right. It might as well be dead. That’s fine. It was never a major conference. My point about the Big 12 falling is that it is one of the top conferences in the league. It shouldn’t be crumbling like this. According to your theory, you can say that Utah’s move to the Pac-12 killed the Mountain West. That led to BYU going independent and TCU going to the Big East.

And for goodness sake, what do you expect the Big 12 to do? Oklahoma and Texas has carried that program in the BCS era. If these programs hated Texas so much, then why don’t they go beat them on the field? They cater to Texas because they win and bring in an audience. Utah and Colorado went to the Pac 12 because they have an audience. That’s what matters in this sport.

Top 5 Over-Rated Teams of the Preseason AP Top 25 (Helmet Pic Edition)

  • 5. Virginia Tech - Will have a solid season and will win quite a few, but not sure that they deserve such high preseason accolades. I’ll still pick them to finish second in their league, but I don’t consider the ACC to be of the caliber they once were.
  • 4. Michigan State - The odds are against them. Really tough schedule. Must replace much of their defense and 3 O-Line positions that aided in last season’s high powered offense. Must be prepared to fight and claw for every win this season.
  • 3. TCU - I will admit that this team is the one I believe may actually live up to their ranking, but they only return 10 starters, including the loss of Andy Dalton to the NFL and 3 of their top receivers that alone accounted for around half of the Horned Frogs receptions and receiving yards in 2010. Also going against our agile amphibians is the fact that they have but a handful of returning starters on defense. I think this team will be one of the most fun to watch this year and I truly hope they make the best out of this season.
  • 2. Boise State - Lost their top 2 receivers from last year that accounted for nearly half of the teams receptions (47.5%), over half of the total receiving yards (51.9%) and half of the receiving touchdowns (19 of the 38). But mainly they are over rated simply because the schedule is so weak. Sorry, join a tougher conference (and not the ACC or Big East) and prove me wrong. But until then accept the fact their schedule is the equivalent to a Little League team beating up on some T-Ballers. Pretty cool new uniforms though.
  • 1. Ohio State - New coach, new quarterback, 8 total returning starter (4 on offense, 4 on defense), plus all the negative attention and media distractions of the past few months… a preseason ranking of 18th is very generous considering all the factors.

College Football starts back up tomorrow night and we see if see if my analysis is accurate. To everybody reading, enjoy the season… It’s gonna be a good one!

I’ll agree with you that Michigan State and Ohio State might be a little high, but the others are pretty accurate. We know that TCU will have a fierce D. Va Tech just has speed and talent all over the place. Some people think their new QB is better than Tyrod Taylor ever was (we’ll see). As for Boise, they are bringing back 17 starters and even without Pettis and Young, they have much depth and experience at WR. They’ll rely a bit more on Doug Martin this year though.

BCS Game Predictions

  • National Championship - Oregon over Auburn
  • Fiesta Bowl - Connecticut over Oklahoma
  • Sugar Bowl - Arkansas over Ohio State
  • Orange Bowl - Virginia Tech over Stanford
  • Rose Bowl - Wisconsin over TCU
